Michelle Obama: New Gay Icon

Tonight, Michelle Obama is the speakers at the DNC's Gay and Lesbian Leadership Council Gala at the Waldorf-Astoria. So this seems as good a time as any for me to declare for the first time publicly that Michelle Obama will be the new gay icon.

Move over Liza Minelli, Bette Midler and Hillary Clinton. I predict that over the next eight years, Michelle (Ms. Obama, if you're nasty!) will move into the top spot in the pantheon of gay icons.

Madonna, Cher and other first name-only celebs will all pale in comparison to the love and affection that will soon be showered on Michelle Obama by gay males across America.

Her style is second to none and based on what we've seen from other politician's wives in the past, it's a safe bet that Michelle Obama will have no problem being as full throated in support of LGBT equality, as her husband is calculating, on the issue of gay marriage.

For whatever reason, political spouses find it easier to speak up forcefully for LGBT equality, than do the candidates themselves. Elizabeth Edwards kicked off last year's San Francisco Pride Parade by announcing, "I'm completely comfortable with gay marriage."

Even the first and second Republican spouses, first lady Laura Bush and second lady Lynne Cheney, have come out against constitutional bans on gay marriage, much to the chagrin of the Dr. James Dobson and the GOP's social conservative base.

For what it's worth, I think Michelle should think about sticking around town for the weekend. She could bring the girls in for a quick tour of the city on Saturday, and on Sunday, she should march in the city's Gay Pride Parade with the Obama Pride Group.
